Convertibles have an unusual appeal to car buyers. Maybe you spot a used Lexus SC on the lot at a great price and for reasons you can't quite explain you're drawn to it like a magnet.

If you just have to follow that itch, used convertibles are an attractive option for people who want to live a little on the wild side but who still need to pay attention to the budget.

Do You Really Need A Convertible?

Let's face it, nobody really needs a convertible. It's a purchase made purely for fun. To some extent all "prestige" cars are expensive toys and convertibles are no exception. Still, there are a few things you need to consider before running out and buying one.

Weather

If you live in some place like Seattle where it rains almost constantly, no matter how much you may want one, a convertible probably isn't that great an idea. On the other hand, if you live in a sunny place like Florida where you can enjoy the car pretty much year round, then a convertible may make more sense.

Security

The second issue that you need to consider is security. Unfortunately, there are some cities in the United States where you will not be able to use a convertible unless you want to put yourself in danger of being mugged or worse.

Top Ten Best Selling Used Convertibles

The following models are considered to be the top-rated used convertibles available.

Thunderbird

The Ford Motor Company originally manufactured the Thunderbird from 1955 to 1997 and again from 2002 to 2005. The first generation was a 2-door, 2-seat convertible with a removable hardtop, while most of the models from the 80's and the 90's were typical coupes. If you want the convertible version of the Thunderbird you'll need to look for the earlier models.

Mustang

Considered an American classic, the Ford Mustang wasn't always a convertible. The majority of models sold since its launch in 1964 are hardtops. These cars were always available in mostly lengthy (saloon) versions such as with 2doors or 4 doors. Hence, this never paved way for the introduction of the convertible models for quite some time but it was then manufactured and launched in the later years. So, if you are interested in a used Mustang for sale, you will need to search a bit to find one of the convertible models.

Lexus SC

Manufactured by the Toyota Corporation, the Lexus SC was introduced in 1992 and has gone through two generations. The first, from 1991 to 2000, was available as a 2-door coupe. It wasn't until the second generation that a convertible became available as a 2-door coupe with a 4.3L V8 engine and an automatic transmission. A used Lexus SC is definitely a luxury car and an excellent choice in a convertible.

Sebring

The convertible version of the Chrysler Sebring has been in production since 1996. It was introduced as a replacement for the Chrysler Le Baron, a model that was produced for almost 20 years. Although not the most popular of this genre, a used Chrysler Sebring convertible should still give you a reliable and enjoyable ride.
