How to Read Used Car Ads

One of the most intensive parts of buying a used car is the search for the perfect deal. That's why you will need to spend a lot of time reading used car classifieds
But, is all that work an efficient way to buy a car? Aren't you spending more money in time and gas searching for a vehicle that you may not find?

A person may find how big his city really is when looking for used cars. Las Vegas, for example, can suddenly become just one used car ad after another. Fortunately, there are some guidelines that can be followed for finding a good, used car and in interpreting what those classified ads really are and aren't saying.

The First Steps

The first thing that you need to consider is how much money you have. This is extremely important since it will constrain your options. Remember that used doesn't mean cheap. A 2004 Ford Expedition is still quite an expensive SUV relative to say a 1993 Jeep Cherokee.

You also need to consider that buying the car isn't the only expense that you are going to incur. There is also the gas, the maintenance and the insurance. How many miles per month are you going to travel? Gas is an expensive commodity and it won't be dropping substantially lower in price any time soon.

What about maintenance? Who is going to do it? It isn't only a matter of price, but also of service. Finally, there is insurance. Premiums can be affected by the make and model of the automobile.

When you have these considerations clearly in mind, start thinking about the make and model in which you are interested. It's always better to approach the want ads with a certain car in mind. You'll be less likely to be tempted by luxury models you can't afford to maintain or impractical cars that would be fun but don't really fit your budget or lifestyle.

Take Your Time

Buying a used car is quite an experience, even if you have done it several times before. Evaluating your budget, searching the ads, examining the cars and negotiating the price all need to be undertaken with patience and consideration. Do not rush to the first car that you find attractive.
